Write a manager update in five minutes

Your manager has several people to keep track of. Your best work can go unnoticed for weeks, and not because anyone is ignoring you. They just do not see most of it.

A short update every week or two fixes that. It takes five minutes if you already have the material.

Pick a rhythm and keep it

Weekly works if your work changes fast. Every two weeks suits longer projects, where a weekly note would repeat itself. The right choice matters less than choosing one and sending it on the same day each time.

Use a fixed format

You are writing for someone skimming between meetings. A format they can read in thirty seconds gets read:

  1. Highlights. Three to five bullets, biggest first. If they read only the first two lines, those should be the ones that matter.
  2. In progress. One line on what you are on now.
  3. Blockers. Anything you need from them. This turns a report into a conversation.

Group the highlights by project if you work on several. Leave out details. If your manager wants more, they will ask in your one-on-one.

Pull from your log, not your memory

The slow part of an update is remembering what you did. If you logged wins during the period, filter by date and the list is already there. If you did not, the update is a good reminder to start.

You can also hand the list to an AI tool with a prompt like “Turn my wins from the past two weeks into a short status update for my manager.” Read it before you send it. Fix anything that sounds like it came from somebody else.

What it gives you later

Fifty short updates are also fifty dated records of what you did. When the review or the promotion conversation arrives, you are not starting from nothing.

Keep your wins in one place.
